About Sri Gupt Ganga Tirth

This is an auspicious place of the lord of Isha, Aman Ganga Ishwar or Gupt Ganga. The glory of this place is explained in Phatkisa Mahatya Khand of Bhrigusamhita. It is said that Ishwar stays here, whose place is the top of the hill which is called Sarveshwar Sarveshwari because the lord stays here as Shiva Shakti along with all the other Gods. The Kashmiri Pandits used to perform ancentral rituals at Gupt Ganga. It is said anyone who takes bath in all the surrounding ponds and then have bath at Gupt Ganga will be free of all sins. The person leaving his body here gets the same moksha as leaving the body in Kashi. It is said there used to be a festival in every Baisakh month.

Danavaraj Bali had also done Sri Charan Nami Yagna here to overcome the curse of giving donation to Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana Avatar. For the Yagna, he had brought the water from all the tirthas. And he had released the rest of tirtha water over here. After this, the water started flowing as Ganga, so it was called Vamana Tirtha. In scriptures, this pond is also called Gupt Tirtha, then called Gupt Ganga.

Lakhsman Joo & Abinavagupta

From 1934 to 1935, Lakshman Joo moved to an isolated place above the village of Gupta Ganga near Nishat suburb of Srinagar where his parents built him a house. This was a place where Abhinavagupta had lived nine centuries before.

It is also said Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati spent time here before going to Amarnath.
