Yempi Mahavihar É Vihara temple in Patan
Yempi Mahavihar, built 2200 years ago by Khatkuti Aju, is a very important and sacred Buddhist site.

This site is mentioned clearly in the biographies of Guru Rinpoche as one of his three main seats, the other two seats being Uddiyana and Samye. As Guru Rinpoche’s main residence and headquarters here in Nepal, it is extremely significant for Buddhists. The mahasiddha (accomplished yogi) Hungkara also stayed here.

Within the walls of É Vihara, The Temple of É, Guru Rinpoché laid the foundations for the tantric teachings to flourish in Nepal and beyond. This temple became the Mahaguru’s primary seat in the Kathmandu Valley, a place where he conversed with siddhas and lay people alike in this age-old city of craftsmen and traders. At the same time, É Vihara was a springboard for tantra, as its teachings moved further north. Texts and teachers streamed forth from this site, as did skilled artisans who could depict the vast pantheon of the Vajrayana’s enlightened activity.

Guru Padmasambhava’s connection to this place is famously remembered in the way he came to the aid of his disciples, in particular on behalf of the Newar yogi king, the grief-stricken Shilamanju. Evil spirits had kidnapped Shilamanju’s daughter, the Mahaguru’s disciple, Kunla Kunsashi. The entire royal family was calling upon their master to help them. The temple is said to have been the starting point for Guru Padmasambhava’s fearless visit to the terrible realms where she had been taken. It is also said to be the site where he subsequently gave profound teachings to the Newars.

About Padmashambhava
Padmasambhava The Lotus Born, is said to have transmitted Tantric Buddhism to Bhutan and Tibet in the 8th century. In those lands he is better known as Guru Rinpoche (“Precious Master”) or Lopon Rinpoche, where followers of the Nyingma school regard him as the second Buddha. He said: “My father is the intrinsic awareness, Samantabhadra. My mother is the ultimate sphere of reality, Samantrabhadri. I belong to the caste of non-duality of the sphere and awareness. My name is the Glorious Lotus Born. I am from the unborn sphere of all phenomena. I consume concepts of duality as my diet. I act in the way of the Buddhas of the three times.” He was born into a monarchic Brahmin family. His Pureland Paradise is Zangdok Palri (the Copper-coloured Mountain). He is further considered an emanation of Amitabha Buddha and traditionally even venerated as “a second Buddha”.
