About Sri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva is situated at a distance of 77 km from Indore and 13 km from Mortakka on the banks of river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Here the river Narmada divides into two parts to form an island called Mandhata or Shivpuri. This island or island is about 4 km long and 2 km wide. The shape of this island is similar to the visual representation of Om or Omkar.

According to the Puranas, Vindhya mountain worshiped Lord Shiva in the form of Parthiv Linga and did penance and Lord Shiva appeared and blessed him and incarnated in the form of Pranav Linga. It got divided and one part was called Omkareshwar and the other part was called Mamleshwar. It is said that Jyoti Linga is located in Omkareshwar and Parthiv Linga is located in Amareshwar/Mamleshwar. According to another story, King Mandhata of Ikshvaku dynasty did severe penance here, then Lord Shiva blessed him and appeared here, since then Lord is sitting in the form of Omkareshwar.

The main temple of Omkareshwar is made of North Indian architecture with high spire. This temple is the main attraction of the visitors. There is no authentic information about the construction of the temple. Who made it and when it is unknown. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple basically looks like a small temple made in the old construction style, its dome has been built by accumulating layers of stone. Since this small temple is built on the south side very close to the straight deep bank of the river at a height and the large part of the north side seems to be built in the new construction style, probably because of this, neither the sanctum sanctorum nor the main deity is directly in front of the main gate. Nor are they located just below the spire of the new construction.
The temple has a huge assembly hall which is about 14 feet high and is based on 60 huge pillars. The temple has 5 floors in total and different deities are installed on all. Which are Shri Omkareshwar, Shri Mahakaleshwar, Shri Siddhnath, Shri Gupteshwar, and Dhwajadhari Shikhar deity respectively from bottom to top.
