About Shri Kalyani Devi Shaktipeeth
‘Shakti Upasana’ has its own place in the glorious spiritual tradition of special India. Here, from innumerable Rishis, Munis, Sadhus, Saints, householders and ascetics to great divine personalities incarnated in the form of incarnations, they have confirmed the great importance of worshiping Shakti by presenting the best ideal of Shakti worship. Maryada Purushottam Ram’s power worship, Leela Purushottam Lord Shri Krishna, who preaches the nectar of Gita in Mahabharata, is a unique example by doing Shakti-Sadhana. Similarly, in the middle ages, Guru Gobind Singh Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sankalp Shiromani Rana Pratap’s Shakti Sadhana and Shakti worship of the great ascetic Paramhans Ramakrishna Swami Vivekananda of the Indian Renaissance period are also a link to the same tradition.
Because of this importance of Shakti worship, innumerable places of worship and worship of Shakti have been established all over India from north to south. In these places of worship, 51 (fifty one) Mahapeeths of Shakti have their own special importance. According to the legend, when Sati sacrificed her life after hearing the blasphemy of Lord Shiva in Daksha Yagya, then Devadhidev became angry with her dead body and started dancing Tandava. In such a situation, with a view to pacify Lord Shiva, Shri Narayan cut Sati’s body with the Sudarshan Chakra. Sati’s cut parts fell at fifty-one places. These fifty-one places were established as fifty-one Mahapeeths of Shakti. A major part of Sati’s body (fingers of the hand) had fallen in Tirtharaj Prayag. Therefore, this place is also one of these fifty one Mahapeeths. This is the reason why Prayagraj is also known as Tirtharaj as well as Peetharaj.
Bhagwati Lalita rested in the form of Kalyani Devi in Prayag. The following lines of Prayag Mahatma under Padma Purana are proof of this fact-
Tasyotare asti lalitha kalyaniti cha geete,
darshanstasya pujabhi: sarveshan erv kamda
(Prayag Mahatmya, Chapter 76, Verse 17)
Thus, according to Prayag Mahatmya, Lalita and Kalyani are the same. Lalita is enshrined as Kalyani Devi. There is also other evidence in favor of the present site of Kalyani Devi being the Mahapeeth. In brief, they can be kept in the following form. According to the Puranas, the sacred courtyard of Bhagwati Lalita in Prayag has been told from Akshayavat in the north-west corner i.e. in the north-west corner, near the Yamuna bank. Bhava-Bhairav is sitting with Bhagwati Lalita Devi in the place of Kalyani Devi. Such mention is found. Very close to the temple of Maa Kalyani is the ancient temple of Bhavnaya Bhairav. The description has come in the third section of Brahmavaivarta Purana. According to this account, Maharishi Yajnavalkya worshiped Bhagwati and installed the statue of Maa Kalyani of 32 fingers in Prayag.
Surely Maharishi Yajnavalkya would not have chosen an ordinary place for worship. He must have chosen the same place, which must have been associated with the life of Sati. In the thirteenth chapter of the Matsya Purana, there is a description of 108 Peethas, in which the name of Kalyanalalita appears first. This is the presiding deity of Maharishi Bhardwaj.
Archaeological evidence also confirms the present temple of Mata Kalyani Devi to be a Shakti Peetha. For example, Archaeologist Dr. Satish Chandra Kala (who has been the Director of Archaeological Department of Uttar Pradesh and Curator of Prayag Museum.) After archaeological study of the statue of Mata Kalyani Devi, concluded that the present statue is fifteen hundred years old. Yes, there is no other place of Maa Bhagwati more ancient than this in Prayag.
In fact, on the basis of all the evidences of scriptures, mythology and history, it can be said that the present place of Mata Kalyani is such a pious ancient and awakened place, which has the distinction of being a Shaktipeeth of Peethraj Prayag.
